Housing more than 50 tenant commands and located about 10 miles from downtown Charleston, SC, Naval Support Activity Charleston (now Joint Base Charleston) sits on about 3400 acres of Lowcountry land. Over 400 years ago, slaves began using the grasses in this area to weave baskets for their fieldwork. During the Civil War, smaller sweetgrass baskets became popular for household uses and for sale as show pieces. Today they are an art form. Our charm is a .925 sterling silver sweetgrass basket with “NSA Charleston SC” inscribed on the bottom.
